A little generalisation has to go into the Breed Standard. These would be the normal traits of the majority of the Kaimanawa's, but their will also be variations. This applies to Pure Bred Kaimanawa's only
Ears should be thick, attentive, well placed and pointed.
General appearance and height: 12.3hh-15.hh Back: Broad and level across loins. Shortish. Tail: Medium set and thick Legs: In proportion to body height. Forelegs straight and squarely set. Hindlegs well apart. Point of hock in line with pelvis bone. Legs reasonably free in motion Hooves: Small neat and upright. Strong and well shaped. Chest: Deep and wide with plenty of heart room Shoulders: Well laid back, but tend to carry weight. Neck: Shortish and thick. Tend to carry a lot of weight. Mane: Thick. Coat: Dense and reasonbly short over the winter. Hairs can tend to spring. Coat comes up short and bright over summer. Colour: Mostly bays, but all colours acceptable. Appearance: Pony-ish looking. Hard, strong and alert. Gait: Not always free flowing due to thick neck and shoulders. Wither: Moderately small. Hindquarters: Usually sloping.
Tendency to carry extra weight. Gait would be much improved with weight off. Very good doers not requiring a lot of feed. HEAD Forehead:Wide. Eyes:Large wide apart, bold. Kind and soft. Nostrils:Wide. Head size:Differs, but medium in size. Clean cut face. Teeth:Slightly bigger than other breeds. Need careful looking after if Kaimanawa coming out of the wild as could have a lot of wear and tear.
